Becoming a butterfly
If it's raining, the daily butterfly parade will be moved back to 5:30 p. m. Lead butterfly - New York costume designer, dancer and yoga instructor Annie Hickman - guided the novices at the workshop Thursday in fluttering and flying techniques. Each day of the festival at 11 a. m. the butterfly parade will start near the children's stage and meander through the festival grounds on a quest for flowers. A couple of weeks before Rylee and her younger sister, Amy, 6, of Shawnee, arrived in Salina for their annual Smoky Hill River Festival visit, grandma Lynn Ryan called and asked the girls if they would be interested in participating in an insect... "Tip your wings up, up and up, and wiggle your hips a little bit," she said. "It was a good experience, and I'm glad I did it. I'm looking forward to being able to perform. This is what makes this so much fun is that feeling of breeze and lift. They agreed, and Thursday morning they were among six girls to try on their flight suits.
