Please pick the flowers
"A cutting garden can be any style, so it's easy to add to existing beds or create a new one," says Houston gardener Pat Hermés. "It can be a formal or cottage garden, a kitchen garden where flowers and vegetables coexist, or planted in containers. As a member of her townhouse complex's landscape committee, she's recently planted a cutting garden supreme - 10 large, raised beds in a geometric grid that spreads across a sunny space formerly used for tennis courts. A cutting garden solves that issue, providing abundant seasonal flowers to harvest. Snipping garden flowers to enjoy indoors is a simple pleasure. Hermés has squeezed cutting flowers into skinny spaces, grown them overhead and utilized every inch of a suburban lot. Functional and decorative rocky swales snake through the rectangular beds, improving drainage and creating planting pockets for pools of color. And the 18-inch-deep beds are arranged for easy access so everyone can collect blooms.
