Winter projects for spring gardens
Make your own seed tape: When it is finally time to plant, you can expedite the process and have perfectly spaced seeds by making your own seed tape. When it is time to plant, place seed tapes in the garden and cover with soil, 1/4- to 1/2-inch deep, according to instructions on the packet. Put soil in each cup of the carton and plant seeds 1/4- to 1/2-inch deep. To plant seedlings, cut cups apart and place them at intervals in the garden as directed on the seed packet. On the seed packet, find instructions for spacing the seeds. Line the lid with a piece of plastic large enough to overlap the edges by an inch or so. Set the cups section of the carton in the plastic-lined lid and lightly water the seeds. Cut newspaper pages or paper towels into 1- to 1 1/2- inch strips. Mini greenhouse: You will need a plastic berry box, empty cardboard paper towel or bath tissue rolls and an empty plastic milk carton. Plant seeds. Start seeds in an empty paper egg carton: Cut off the lid and set aside. Close the lid of the berry box to maintain moisture until seeds sprout. Keep soil moist until seeds sprout. Cut about an inch around the bottom of a plastic milk carton to form a tray. Make a paste with 1/4 cup flour and water. Cut 4 slits into one end of each tube, forming four flaps about a quarter of the depth of the tube.
