The Joys of Gardening on Cedar Creek
The couple said the creek is beneficial to their gardening efforts — Bob has installed a water system for his yard using creek water. Bob and Kathleen Joy live in a flood zone along Cedar Creek, but it's not always a disaster when the creek comes rolling through their backyard garden. Bob Joy said the creek overflows when the rains fall just right — and it's often just the thing they need for their half-acre garden spread out along its banks. The Joys have had floodwater in their garden and yard several times over the years. Keep weeds and grass out of the garden so they will not take over the moisture needed for the vegetables. Keep garden soil turned and free of weeds all winter. Fortunately, "the water usually goes down pretty fast when the creek overflows," Bob, 73, said. Occasionally, the water gets "right up to our back doorsteps," said Kathleen Joy, 72. Share your garden with friends and strangers.
