Visiting private and public gardens and photographing gardens you like is a good idea, too. One way to determine what you like is to peruse gardening magazines, books and catalogs looking for examples of landscapes you like. No matter your style, crisp and distinct landscape bed lines define your design and are the key to making a design pop. The mailbox has been brimming with gardening catalogs for the past month offering ideas and inspiration for what you can do in your yard this year. Few professional garden designers are totally original in their ideas and seek inspiration in the same manner. Even though it can be good to play around with ideas on paper to get a feel for what will work best in your landscape, the best design can happen where you see and feel the lay of the land. Just as with clothes, cars and interior decorating, your garden can reflect your personal sense of style. January is a great time to assess your garden style.
