'Garden Angels' beautify Parish of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church grounds
She recruited fellow gardeners, and soon the Garden Angels, as they call themselves, came into being. It’s a cool, breezy morning at the Catholic church, 2230 Lake Michigan Drive NW, and Holy Spirit’s Garden Angels are ready to kneel and plant. GRAND RAPIDS — The angels come walking up to Parish of the Holy Spirit, bearing flats of flowers and casserole dishes. They meet each Wednesday at the church to plant and maintain the gardens on Holy Spirit’s ample grounds. She got them started about 10 years ago after planting a few flowers around the pieta statue out front, depicting Mary holding the body of Christ. Maggie Wind greets them all in a periwinkle sweatshirt (“Gardener Outstanding in My Field”), with watering-can earrings and a brooch of three golden angels. “We all love to garden, and we love each other,” says Ruth Levanduski, who particularly loves irises.
