Green Space: Winter thaws pop bulbs
Almost any spring-blooming bulb can be forced into blooming indoors. Bulbs that pop from soil heaving should be ready to force indoors. The secret is the bulbs must spend a month or so in a cool, place before planting. The soil should be fast draining to avoid rotting the bulb. FORCING BULBS. The physics of freezing and thawing tears the bulbs out of their secure beds underground. The same can happen with any bulbs, especially daffodils and tulips. This is common and although frightful, will not harm the bulbs. Something’s always waiting for our discovery in the gardening world. I hiked around our yard picking up sticks and noticed my Asiatic lily tubers had popped out of the soil. Then I found they were offshoots connected to mother plants underground. It’s a good, free source to build our plantings over the seasons. These were the babies, coveted for expanding the planting.
