Where happy, they will seed themselves and established clumps will expand. Then, if you like those, progress to popular named varieties like ‘Atkinsii’ which is bigger, ‘Magnet’ whose flowers hang elegantly or ‘Viridapicis’ which has green smudges on its outer petals. The species G. elwesii has broad leaves and exquisitely marked flowers and there are interesting double-flowered varieties like ‘Ophelia’ and ‘Lady Beatrix Stanley. But, like good house guests, they know when to go, withering quickly and leaving room for the bigger plants to flourish. I like to dot both among sleeping border perennials as well as growing them in rough grass and under our trees. WHITE DRIFTS There are hundreds of snowdrop varieties but half a dozen will satisfy all but the most anorakish. Each is lovely on its own but white snowdrops and perky yellow aconites perform as sweetly together as Morecambe and Wise.
