Group Seeks to Make Food Supply Sustainable
The Willamette Grass and Seed Project wants food to stay hyper-local, no more than 150 miles from field to pantry. -- The Willamette Valley is called the grass seed capital of the world. "If we had any natural disasters at all, we won't have anything," said Willow Coberly, Willamette Seed and Grain. But what happens here when grass seed profits fall flat. "Instead of 95 percent of our food coming from outside the valley, 95 percent coming from inside the valley," Coberly said. But Coberly and Stalford Farm have been told this soil can't support anything other than grass. A group of local farmers is pushing for more food security, especially after seeing Japan's food shortage following their natural disasters. Coberly says she'd like to turn the tables on where our food comes from.
