Plants add beauty, lure birds and butterflies
While planting and wildlife experts easily will offer lists of plants and flowers that will bring activity and color to a backyard, many also will point out serious aspects that need to be considered. The simple matter of providing plants that are attractive and provide nutrition or homes quickly gets involved in the cycle of life. For instance, Jim Bonner, executive director of the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, points out the butterfly bush is a common and effective way of luring butterflies. "In that way, we are using nature to promote the food chain," says the founder of an urban site that provides growth areas for native plants. Sometimes, bird and butterfly attracting activities can be so centered on attractive plants, that the important element of nutrition is overlooked. Kathryn McGregor from Sylvania Natives in Squirrel Hill says a good collection of native grasses can provide a habitat for insects that then attract hungry birds.
