Mendham council approves $7.3M budget
The council budgeted a total of $698,500 for capital improvements, which includes $171,000 for the sewer plant, $75,000 for a four-wheel dump truck and $12,500 for a commercial lawn mower. The borough will undertake two road projects: Ironia Road will be resurfaced at a cost of $180,000, and the parking lot for Mendham Area Senior Housing will be repaved at a cost of $170,000. Borough attorney Fred Semrau said the property revaluation conducted last fall, which lowered the average home assessment from $875,000 to $707,000, saved the borough money because fewer residents have sought tax relief through an appeal. Health care costs increased 34 percent, or $81,500, to $525,000, and the police pension fund contribution went up $38,411, according to Councilman John Andrus, who chairs the finance committee. Had the revaluation not taken place, Semrau told the council the number "probably would have hit 100. Andrus said the borough is in good shape financially because the debt is relatively low at about $5 million. The council dealt with twin blows of a $152,484 loss in state aid and a total of $125,889 in rising fixed costs, according to Mayor Neil Henry.
